Oscar Pistorius And Guns

Before I make this comment please note that I support the second amendment to the US Constitution that allows people to have firearms. I think that anyone with the lawful right to a firearm should have one if they want it.

Having said that, I think back to one of my father's favorite sayings as follows:

"Son a gun will get you into more trouble than it will ever get you out of."

I am fascinated with the Oscar Pistorius case in South Africa. Please bear in mind that South Africa has terrible crime problems. If someone breaks into your home or apartment there, all females inside, most likely, will be raped by HIV-positive men. Valuables will be taken and there is a good chance that the robbers will decide to kill everyone in the house to make sure there are no witnesses left to identify them.

In that kind of scenario, it's not hard to imagine someone who "shoots first and asks questions later."

Oscar Pistorius's defense team wants you to believe this scenario.

The state prosecutor claims that Pistorius flew into a very violent rage and decided to kill Reeva. He then fired the four deadly shots.

In most cases like this the truth is somewhere in between. Perhaps Pistorius flew into a rage. That is not premeditated murder. It's 2nd degree murder. Perhaps he made a terrible mistake and this is some sort of manslaughter case.

In any event with the prior irresponsible conduct Pistorius displayed with firearms, I contend that the South African Police should have suspended his firearms license and seized his weapons. There would have been no gun in the residence on that fateful night and Reeva would still be alive.
