Niger is concerned over the possible influx of armed forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi crossing into Niger from southern Libya, The New York Times reported Sept. 13. Niger presidential spokesman Massaoudou Hassoumi said the worst-case scenario that has not yet occurred, but Niger will have to disarm the emigrants if there is no negotiated settlement between the Libyan factions. He said the Libyan National Transitional Council in Tripoli is neglecting its duty in patrolling its borders and it should prevent the Gadhafi loyalists from crossing into Niger. He said Tripoli’s failure places a heavy security burden on Niger which already must combat al Qaeda’s North African faction. Hassoumi called for more support, saying that Niger has been shouldering the world’s security situation all alone.
